The Textbook: The Teachers of Today El libro de texto: los profesores de hoy Céspedes, José Pablo Vargas, Jean Carlo Pérez, Edwin Andrés Chavarría, Adrián libros de texto proceso de enseñanza y aprendizaje recursos didácticos metodología modelo pedagógico textbook teaching and learning process teaching materials methodology pedagogical model This is a research synthesis done with the goal of comprehending and interpreting the real role of textbooks in the classrooms. This paper shows the unnecessary usage of textbooks for conducting the teaching-learning process. Thestudy results were obtained at a private high school in Limon province which holds a medium-class population. Nonetheless, this institution possesses anexcellent infrastructure and parents pay a high fare, the educational quality resembles a public school one. This is due to the lack of correspondence between the curricular content and the teaching objectives that are established for this type of centers. Este artículo es una síntesis de una investigación realizada con el afán de comprender e interpretar la realidad de la función que cumplen los libros de texto dentro de los salones de clase, donde se evidenció lo innecesario de operar con éstos para llevar a cabo el proceso de enseñanza y de aprendizaje. Los resultados del estudio fueron obtenidos en un colegio privado de la provincia de Limón, el cual alberga una población de clase media. Este colegio posee una infraestructura en óptimas condiciones y a su vez los padres de familia cancelan una mensualidad elevada, pero la calidad de educación se asemeja a la de un colegio público, ya que los contenidos curriculares que se enseñan no corresponden a los objetivos que pretenden alcanzar dichos centros educativos. It is always a source that brings meaning to life. Any word means openness and expressive action. It is its way of talking because it becomes writing and a  dialoguing verb (any sign, icon, graph, or shape) in order to create that visual and audible body that becomes meaningful to itself and to other receptors -its audio-listeners, video-listeners, radio-listeners, TV-listeners... phono-listeners-. lt is in this process of listening to a word or words where the reality of being becomes real. Leaming how to listen is leaming how to live from and with the word or words which are the ones that talk with all the reason senses. La palabra recorre, a través del lenguaje, infinitos discursos comunicativos. La palabra nunca es única, absoluta o abstracta, aunque, a veces, en su silencio parezca ausente. Ella siempre es un surco que nos abre a la vida del sentido. Toda palabra es, entonces, apertura y acción expresiva, comunicativa. Esa es su forma de hablar, porque se convierte en escritura y verbo dialogante (de cualquier signo o icono, por simple que sea su grafía o forma), para dar a luz ese cuerpo visual y auditivo con el que se descubre frente a sí y a los otros que son sus receptores, sus audio-escuchas, video-escuchas, radio-escuchas, tele-escuchas…fono-escuchas. Es en el escuchar la(s) palabra(s) de unos y otros, donde el ser de la realidad se hace posible para todos. The Andes regional folk music is one of the scenarios that offer the biggest and richest elements in cultural identity studies. On the one hand, the accelerated North Americanization of its cultural models and the conservative turn of its dominant political power are based on a trend that since 1994, with the Free Trade Agreement signed with the United States and Canada, wants to establish as definitive: think about ourselves and plan our future in the shadow of the empire, which would imply distancing ourselves from the new cycle of political and social organization that Latin America is experiencing. A qualitative research was conducted out of 11th grade students interviews on two different highs chools institutions of the country, Student's bad performance is not necessarily related to their level of logic and mathematical development but on some other issues such as the following. It seems not natural to start physics by teaching vectors when forces and energy are much more natural concepts to a teenager. Such a change is recommended. It is also recommended a limited use of mathematical tools, at least on initial steps, a reduction on the number of topics on the curriculum and a wide use of significative leaming strategies, instead of blackboard and chalk most used. Among such strategies daily problem-solving using the scientific method, guiding the student and let him discover natural laws by himself, using a historical approach when scientific knowledge is provided, and some other tips are suggested. Este artículo aborda los problemas que enfrentan los estudiantes de 10° año del Ciclo Diversificado de Educación Secundaria en Costa Rica, en el aprendizaje de la Física, a partir de los resultados de una investigación cualitativa realizada con estudiantes de 11° año en dos instituciones educativas del país.  Del análisis de resultados fue posible concluir que no necesariamente el desarrollo lógico matemático del alumno juega un papel limitante en el aprendizaje, sino el abordaje de la disciplina con un tema poco natural a los estudiantes a ese nivel, esto es, el inicio con el tema de vectores.  Se recomienda cambiar el orden de los contenidos, empezando con el tema de fuerza y energía, haciendo un uso limitado de herramientas matemáticas, al menos en las etapas iniciales del aprendizaje, reducir el número de contenidos del programa y poner en práctica una serie de estrategias didácticas que aumenten el carácter significativo del aprendizaje para el alumno, entre las cuales se cuentan resolver problemas de la vida cotidiana con el uso del método científico, permitir al estudiante arribar por sí mismo al descubrimiento de las leyes físicas, replicando en la medida de lo posible, el esquema de pensamiento de la época en que se produjeron y considerando los instrumentos y condiciones de esa época. It shows the historical origin of this strategy promoting a mandatory change in the banking and associationist teaching, a teaching model which takes into account the student and his teaching environment. It also explains a series of aspects to be used in the high school science classes in Costa Rica; as well as other metacognitive and constructivist trends in order to ensure a meaningful leaming on the studied topic considering the different leaming styles and multiple intelligences. lt also mentions the possible scope and limitations of the applied strategy. The main idea of using the guided research is that by using the scientific method, students built by themselves a body of knowledge that allows them to scientifically explain intriguing daily phenomena. En el presente artículo se pone en perspectiva y se analiza detalladamente una de las estrategias de aprendizaje dirigida a la enseñanza de las Ciencias y denominada como: investigación dirigida. Meaning and Obstacles of Innovative Work at School Significado y obstáculos para la labor innovadora en una escuela Baltodano Zúñiga, Víctor Julio Badilla Alvarado, Ana Rita educación primaria innovación primary school education innovation This article addresses the meaning and factors that hinder educational innovation in a school, in this case the José Daniel Carmona Briceño Presbyterian School in Ciudad Carmona, Nandayure, Guanacaste. The main factors for this are time availability, budgetary problems, physical and emotional exhaustion, training, little or no systematization, schedules with little logical structure, lack of support from the authorities and, in general terms, a lack of a culture within primary education to innovate. The importance of educational innovation is recognized as a fundamental element that generates meaningful learning, but, at the same time, that is difficult to be put it into practice. In the case of children, despite having a very positive image of their teachers, they point out that the excessive theoretical nature of the classes they receive discourages them. Therefore, it is urgent to implement actions that lead to more appealing and innovative classes. El presente artículo aborda el significado y factores que obstaculizan la innovación educativa en una escuela, en este caso la Escuela Presbítero José Daniel Carmona Briceño de Ciudad Carmona, Nandayure, Guanacaste. Dentro de los principales factores se apuntan: disponibilidad de tiempo, problemas presupuestarios, desgaste físico y emocional, capacitación, poca o nula sistematización, horarios con estructuración poco lógica, falta de apoyo por parte de las autoridades y, en términos generales, falta de una cultura dentro de la educación primaria para innovar. Se reconoce la importancia de la innovación educativa como elemento fundamental que genera un aprendizaje significativo; pero a la vez la dificultad que se tiene para que esta se lleve a la práctica. En el caso de los niños, a pesar de tener una imagen muy positiva de sus maestras, apuntan que lo excesivamente teórico de las clases que reciben los desmotivan. Por lo tanto, es urgente implementar acciones que conduzcan a clases más atractivas, e innovadoras a la vez, por parte de los docentes. Classroom interaction and language learning among boys in coed and single-sex contexts Rojas Alfaro, Roberto Enrique boys EFL gender learning styles school language teachers teaching strategies single-sex education coeducation boys EFL gender learning styles school language teachers teaching strategies single-sex education coeducation This paper will address the differences and similarities in EFL interactive patterns of boys' learning in gender specific learning environments. The presentation will explore the findings of observational research conducted in coeducational and single-sex classrooms in two secondary schools in Costa Rica, namely Yorkin and New Hope schools. Data collection included class observation, interviews, surveys, questionnaires, photo ethnography and artifacts. The results revealed that boys in both contexts actually learn and behave similarly regardless of the gender specific learning environment in which they were immersed. They evidenced preference for kinesthetic, cognitive learning styles and task-oriented learning. Besides suggesting the need for school changes, the sudy brings out implications for teachers to adapt teaching strategies to acommodate their boys' learning styles. At present, the creative process is influenced by the concepts that are produced about the literary phenomenon in academic settings. In this sense, as Amoretti (1995) points out, regarding the concept of intertextuality, that literary theory has become not only a space to reflect on the phenomenon of writing, but it also constitutes a valuable resource for creators, who, thanks to this type of knowledge, explicitly and consciously have various strategies that are used in the textualization process. Uno de los rasgos más sobresalientes de la literatura contemporánea es la autoconciencia. En la actualidad, el proceso creador se ve influenciado por los conceptos que se producen sobre el fenómeno literario en los ámbitos académicos. Rodríguez Allen, Ana bioética Costa Rica biomédica crítica fertilización in vitro derecho de la vida bioethics Costa Rica biomedicine criticism in-vitro fertilization right to live As we will see in this essay, the decision of the Constitutional Chamber on in vitro fertilization was the spark that awakened the public about what is correct and what is not correct in the biomedical field and revealed trends in this discussion. In the case of the national press, only one vision was shown, that of paternalistic medical ethics. And above all, they began to speak of a new field of knowledge called bioethics, but a bioethics with a Costa Rican matrix, which left critical bioethics aside, whose approach shows a new vision that shakes the traditional paradigm of classical medicine. Como veremos en este ensayo, la decisión de la Sala Constitucional sobre la fertilización in vitro, fue la chispa que despertó a la ciudadanía acerca de lo que es correcto y lo que no lo es en el campo biomédico y puso al descubierto tendencias en esta discusión. En el caso de la prensa nacional se mostró solo una visión, de la ética paternalista médica. Y sobre todo se empezó a hablar de un nuevo campo del conocimiento llamado bioética; pero una bioética con matriz costarricense, que dejaba al margen la bioética crítica, cuyo planteamiento muestra una novedosa visión que sacude el paradigma tradicional de la medicina clásica. For this purpose, one has to take and use knowledge of philosophy, anatomy, biochemistry, microbiology, genetics, nuclear medicine, immunology, pathology, etc., but also from the physics of chemistry, etc., and even more of psychology, of society and also of ethics. What should be emphasized is the global vision, the holistic conception of the patient. This raises a progressive subdivision and superspecialization of medical knowledge, generating problems of an epistemological-didactic order and even of an ethical order. En la práctica de la medicina se utilizan los conocimientos con un determinado y concreto fin: prevenir, aliviar o curar los padecimientos de un ser humano enfermo. Para este fin, se ha de tomar y usar conocimientos de la filosofía, de la anatomía, de la bioquímica, de la microbiología, de la genética, de la medicina nuclear, de la inmunología, de la patología, etc.; pero también de la física de la química, etc. y aún más de la psicología, de la sociedad y también de la ética. Lo que debe subrayarse, es la visión global, la concepción holística del paciente. Simón Rodríguez and José Martí: Initial Features of Latin American Critical Pedagogy Simón Rodríguez y José Martí: rasgos iniciales de pedagogía crítica Latinoamericana López, Diana pensamiento y pedagogía Latinoamaricana pedagogías críticas Latin American thinking and pedagogy critical pedagogy The reflection is shown below, presents some considerations about the main educational ideas in the nineteenth century built by American thinkers and their relationship with the spirit of later American educational streams that flow into the construction of critical pedagogy, understanding the contextual distance have given origin, showing the linkage of a regional-original thought that begins with independence and is enriching, deepening posterity. Some of the questions that cause this writing, the varied and valuable guide research efforts in the field of education and pedagogy are: Why can consider the thought of José Martí and Simón Rodríguez as the beginning of what today is conceived as critical Pedagogies?, why it can be said that there, in thinking of these early American underlie critical pedagogies? An analysis of what are the foundations of critical pedagogies and those similarities exist with the theory advanced by Simón Rodríguez and José Martí. La reflexión que se presenta a continuación expone algunas consideraciones sobre las principales ideas pedagógicas construidas en el siglo XIX por pensadores latinoamericanos y su relación con el espíritu de posteriores corrientes pedagógicas americanas, que desembocan en la construcción de las pedagogías críticas, comprendiendo las distancias contextuales que les han dado origen, mostrando la vinculación de un pensamiento regional-original que comienza con la independiencia y se va enriqueciendo, profundizando en la posteridad. The poor training and attitudes of the teachers and the bad planning of the educational policies are some of the topics implicit throughout this document. Tomando como referente teórico el plan pedagógico liberador propuesto por Paulo Freire, en este ensayo se hace un análisis de los indicadores que permiten evidenciar en el modelo educativo nacional una crisis de libertad desde la perspectiva del docente, el estudiante y el ente rector de la educación secundaria: el Ministerio de Educación Pública. For that purpose, some fundamental insights in the search for new pedagogical meanings are presented, according to approaches based on exploration and imagination; playfulness and sensitivity; self-regulation, integration and inclusion; ecology and sustainable development, and complexity. The research on that field represents an excellent way of analyzing the process through a teacher's introspection on his own feelings and opinions. This reflection allows the teacher to recognize his strengths and weaknesses in order to improve his teaching practice. This paper presents some techniques on how to approach the classroom research and the action-research as methods for valuing the guided teaching practicum of most of the practices in careers in teaching, except for the teaching of English of Educology Division. El análisis de la práctica pedagógica debe ser una actividad continua y sistemática, en procura del mejoramiento de los procesos de enseñanza y aprendizaje. La investigación de dichas prácticas es una excelente forma de analizar estos procesos. A través de ella, los(as) docentes llevan a cabo una introspección de todo lo que hacen, de cómo se sienten y cómo están conceptualizando su labor. Todo esto a través de una reflexión sobre y en la acción en la que pueden visualizar los aciertos y desaciertos de su trabajo; así como todo lo que se debe mejorar. Against this requirement, this research is to design a proposal to improve the teaching-learning process and to know the attitude of the students during a physics lesson, likewise, achieve a development of the mathematical foundations of students. This conception has provoked serious problems in the teaching process because students have not developed a proper interest and motivation that fulfill their learning needs provoking effects on the scientific and technological development of the country. In order to take note of the situation, a research was conducted at a private day institution in the 01 circuit of Heredia province. The information was gathered through different instruments: three six-lesson observations, a teacher interview, a students' questionnnaire about their opinion on Science class methodology and the use of teaching resources. Finally, amotivational scale was given to students to measure and determine their interest on the subject and their lived experiences as part of their learning process. En el ámbito educativo, tradicionalmente la ciencia se ha concebido una materia totalmente expositiva dentro del curriculum de las instituciones, generando problemas graves en el proceso de enseñanza, puesto que, no se desarrolla el interés y motivación correcta que satisfaga las necesidades de los educandos produciendo problemas en el desarrollo científico y tecnológico de nuestro país. Para constatar esta situación se realizó una investigación en una institució diurna privada del circuito 01 de la provincia de Heredia. Para la recopilación de la información se realizaron: tres observaciones al grupo en seis lecciones, una entrevista al docente, asimismo un cuestionario a cada estudiante del grupo para conocer su agrado y motivación por la metodología de las clases de Ciencias, así como determinar cuálestécnicas y recursos didácticos son las de más agrado para ellos. Por último se les aplicó a los estudiantes una escala de motivación con el fin de medir y determinar el interés del alumno en la materia y experiencias vividas dentro del proceso de aprendizaje. Methodological Proposal that Facilitates the Social Integration of a Student with the Asperger Syndrome with His Classmates in a Group from a High School of Circuit 01 in Heredia Propuesta metodológica que facilite la integración social de un estudiante que presenta Síndrome de Asperger con sus compañeros de clase en una sección de un Colegio del circuito 01 de Heredia Durán Alvarado, Eifrin Montero De Hooge, Christopher socialización propuesta motivación técnicas Asperger Asperger syndrome educational methodology academic performance social behavior social integration An educational methodology was elaborated in this investigation to facilitate the social integration of a student with Asperger syndrome with his classmates in section 8 B of a high school that belongs to the circuit 01 of the province of Heredia, Costa Rica. To accomplish this investigation, the collected information was acquired through anecdotal record and non-participatory observations of the students' classroom behavior, as well as for identifying the techniques used by the science teacher during the lessons that motivated the students' participation. Also, one interview was applied to the psychologist of the institution and one towards specific work groups of section 8B, including the learner with Asperger syndrome. According to the dataanalysis, the student with Asperger Syndrome does not difficulty with his academic performance; the teacher does not exploit his personal taste or interests, and his social behavior is hampered by the fact that he considers his classmates less intellectually capable. En la siguiente investigación se construyó una propuesta metodológica para facilitar la socialización de un estu diante con síndrome de Asperger con sus compañeros de clase en una sección de octavo año de un colegio del circuito 01 de heredia. Para ello, se comenzó por indagar bibliográficamente sobre las características de dicho síndrome, así como posibles métodos para mejorar la calidad de vida de estas personas. Se realizaron varias observaciones para conocer el comportamiento del estudiante con síndrome de Asperger, así como las técnicas utilizadas por la educadora de ciencias de octavo año para identificar cómo éstas motivan la participación de dicho estudiante. Además, se aplicaron entrevistas hacia la psicóloga de la institución educativa y hacia estudiantes de dicha sección de octavo año, incluyendo al estudiante con síndrome de Asperger, para crear un perfil de éste. Con los datos bibliográficos, de las observaciones y de las entrevistas se elaboró la propuesta metodológica. Emphasis is placed on in corporating technology as an integral part of the activities of the tutors in their work sessions, while rescuing the linguistic importance of diagnosis as the first step to the design of a customized curriculum content. The paper also introduces how to develop a virtual mentoring platform with in theuniversity, drawing on the experience of the authors, as coordinators of programs of Spanish as a Foreign Language at Universidad Nacional, Costa Rica En el presente documento se describen tres distintas modalidades de tutorías académicas que suelen acompañar el currículo de los programas de E/LE, con el propósito de resaltar su contribución en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje de los estudiantes que viajan a otro país para aprender español in situ. Se hace énfasis en la incorporación de la tecnología como parte integral de las actividades que realizan los tutores en sus sesiones de trabajo y se rescata la importancia del diagnóstico lingüístico como el paso previo al diseño curricular personalizadodel contenido de dichas sesiones. Affective filter influence on students' initiating the b.a. english major at the Universidad Nacional, Chorotega branch in Nicoya, Guanacaste, Costa Rica Dover, Yendry language acquisition process young adult learners affective filter language acquisition process young adult learners affective filter Affective filter is a commoly accepted component in foreign language learning for adults, are internalized emotional barriers frequently established by learners as a way of psychologically protecting them when confronting the challenge of producing the target language Krashen (1987). With this natural defense mechanism is attempting to help the individuals from damaging their egos, it is in fact counter-productive to the language learning process. This qualitative study explores and describes the negative impact of affective filters in a group of entrance level, young adult students at the Universidad Nacional, Chorotega Branch campus in Guanacaste, Costa Rica. In addition, it tests some strategies in lowering the affective filter in this particular group. The results showed that there was a significant impact in how affective filter delimit the learning process and the need for professionals in the field of language learning to address this issue especially in the beginning of the language acquisition process.
