Abstract

The regime of Porfirio Diaz-Porfiriato-sought "progress" for Mexico, leaving the indigenous communities at the margin. The Chihuahuan Governor Enrique Creel, however, prompted a controversial legislation in 1906, that looked for the "integration" of the Tarahumara Indians into the "Mexican family". What kinds of preoccupations and interests motivated this project? This article intends to respond to this question.
