Scientific production on physical activity sciences in Costa Rica: an historical-bibliometric approach

Introduction: Since the end of the 20th century, several initiatives related to scientific publications on physical activity sciences in Costa Rica have been developed, ignoring their contribution to the dissemination of knowledge about this topic. Objective: To carry out a bibliometric analysis of the MHSalud journal and the Pensar en Movimiento journal in relation to their scientific productivity, the disciplines represented, and collaboration patterns. Methodology: All research articles published in both journals until 2022 were reviewed. The website of each journal was consulted. The information was recorded and the distribution of articles by year, journal, and language were calculated, as well as the number and percentage of the most productive authors and institutions. The articles were also classified according to their discipline and the average number of authors per article, number of individual articles, collaborative articles and percentage of collaboration were determined. Results: 342 articles were found, 148 published in MHSalud and 194 in Pensar en Movimiento. The most represented disciplines were life sciences and psychology in both journals. Salazar Rojas and Araya Vargas were the most productive authors, while the most represented institutions were the UNA and the UCR. Conclusion: The journals MHSalud and Pensar en Movimiento are in an embryonic stage of development, being mainly means of dissemination of the research activity carried out within the UNA and the UCR. Both journals must continue to strengthen their international collaboration networks to improve their visibility, their quality and enable their indexing in international databases.
