Welcome to the site of the Revista de Ciencias Ambientales (Tropical Journal of Environmental Sciences), an international, interdisciplinary, open access scientific journal established in 1980 that is published continously with a semi-annual schedule, from the Department of Environmental Sciences of the Universidad Nacional (UNA), Costa Rica. Our mission is to to stimulate, publish and disseminate novel, relevant and rigorous research in the environmental field that allows professionals, researchers and students through their daily practices and training processes to contribute to the solution of environmental problems, particularly for the Latin American region. Our primarily audience is made by the national and international community of scholars and graduate students interested in the disciplines aligned with environmental sciences and working on key aspects in the Latin American region. The scope of the journal includes the following themes: management and conservation of natural resources, biodiversity, watersheds, forests, ecosystem services, climate change, environmental management, sustainability, environmental education, socioeconomics and the environment, and others related themes that attain to the better understanding, management and protection of the environment, but particularly to the solution of environmental problems in Latin America.

The Journal has an Editorial Board and an International Scientific Committee with scientists from different world regions invited to participate and collaborate voluntarily with the journal given their highly regarded contributions and expertise in the environmental sciences. As you can see on the right, the journal is currently found in multiple indexes, repositories, search engines and information systems.

The Journal publishes the following types of writings:

  • Articles:
    • Original articles resulting from research works.
    • Methodological articles: they present new or significantly improved methodologies.
    • Theoretical reviews: they analyze the theory in an organized way to explain the state of the art and the construction of new theoretical proposals in a thematic area. These reviews are carried out by experts on the subject, and must follow a strict methodology typical of said articles that includes systematic analysis or meta-analysis (a, b, c, d, e).  Among others, essays, non-systematized literature reviews, discussions, dissertations are not accepted.
  • Technical notes: short descriptions of current original research with some urgency for publication.

By invitation are also published biografies, experiences, and forum.

All submitted original manuscripts (articles and technical notes) are subject to a blind peer review process. During this process reviewers use an Manuscript evaluation form to provide their verdict and have the duty of confidentiality or obligation of secrecy to not disclose the manuscript that has been entrusted for review.

The articles published in the journal must be strictly original, that is, they cannot have been published in any other media or be under review in any other media. Along with the manuscript, the corresponding author should send to the journal office the Statement of originality and copyright transfer.

The authors are not charged for processing, editing, sending and publishing articles. The content of the work to be published or posted is the sole responsibility of the author and ideas, opinions and statements raised in the article are not necessarily shared by the Journal. The published articles are governed by CreativeCommons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 4.0 International License (CC BY-NC-SA 4.0 International), which implies readers can freely download, store, copy, and distribute the final approved and published version (post print) of the paper as long as it is not done so for commercial purposes, no derivative work is created, and the source and author of the article are mentioned. Considering that the published articles are peer-reviewed to ensure their quality and are completely free of charge for the authors as well as for the readers, the Tropical Journal of Environmental Sciences is considered in the open access diamond route.
