Aterosclerosis en ave cacatúa ninfa (Nymphicus hollandicus): Reporte de un caso en Costa Rica

Resumen

Una cacatúa ninfa (Nymphicus hollandicus), hembra de 10 años, que fallece súbitamente durante la consulta médica, fue evaluada, histopatológicamente, en el laboratorio Unidad de Diagnóstico en Patología Aviar, Escuela de Medicina Veterinaria, Universidad Nacional. En la evaluación, post-mortem, macroscópicamente, destaca el hallazgo de engrosamiento, tortuosidad y múltiples nodulaciones de la aorta ascendente, en sus bifurcaciones y otras arterias en la base del corazón. El estudio histopatológico revela diversos grados de lesiones arteriales causadas por aterosclerosis. En este reporte, se describe y caracteriza las lesiones histológicas además, se realiza una revisión de las medidas preventivas, métodos diagnósticos y tratamientos disponibles para manejo de esta patología en aves de Costa Rica.
